From Paris to Penang, With Love

By WINNIE YEOH

GEORGE TOWN: It was a dream come true and a mission accomplished for Yang Swee How when his girlfriend Toh Sze Wooi accepted his marriage proposal under the Eiffel Tower in Paris last September.

Yang and Toh who had been courting for six years, had known each other for nine years since they were students of Tunku Abdul Rahman College

From Paris with love : Yang (left) and Toh tie the knot.

“It meant the world to me when she said ‘yes’ to my proposal,” said Yang, a postgraduate student pursuing a PhD in micro engineering in Britain.

Toh, who always wanted to visit Paris, said it was double joy when Yang proposed to her at the tower.

Although Paris is touted as the perfect place to get married for young couples like Yang and Toh, both of them, aged 27, still decided to register their marriage at home and on Valentine’s Day.

They were among 25 couples who tied the knot at the Penang Chinese Town Hall during a mass marriage registration ceremony.

For Rachel Yeoh, 22, and 26-year-old Ryan Lee, who married in another mass wedding at the Penang Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society with 59 other couples, it was hate at first sight when they met at a school camp seven years ago.

“I was a Girl Guide from Convent Light Street and he was a Scout from Penang Free School at the camp where he constantly bullied and picked on me, giving me chores like picking up rubbish and cleaning the camp area,” said Yeoh, a university student.

Love, however, blossomed when they met at other group outings when Lee, a sales consultant, showed his “loving and considerate” side.

‘Besties’ couples: (From left) Khoo, Lee, Yeoh and Tung plan to hold their wedding dinner in June and go on honeymoon together to Europe.

The couple’s best friends Khoo Kah King, 26, and Fiona Tung, 25, who were also in the mass wedding, planned to hold a joint wedding reception with them in June and go on the same honeymoon trip to Europe in December.

“We have been really close friends for the past six years and Lee is like a brother to me,” said businessman Khoo.
